The Atlas turntable has a rubber band drive which can stretch and slip off the drive wheel particularly with heavy locos so this conversion gets over that problem.
How to convert an Atlas turntable to direct drive
Its not too difficult the only problem is that to do it simply the motor has to be vertically mounted hence the building to hide the motor because the Atlas cover is too small
I have attached the pictures which I hope are self explanatory
The motor is a 12v hobby motor which has a built in reduction gearbox of 1:100
Basically the motor replaces the hand crank and is fixed with a brass boss (hobby shop or make one), to do this you need to carefully drill out the shaft of the small gear wheel from the crank so that the shaft of the motor will slide in, the brass boss is there to grip the two together so that the motor doesn't spin in the gear wheel.
Feel free to respond if you need more advice

Eric, Have you ever taken the screw out of the bridge to lift it up and worked on the inside of the table?
