This is my ballast work using starter chicken grit and Gargraves track. Note that I use a darker shade in the yard area (shown near turntable). I use 4 different shades throughout the layout for mainlines, sidings, yards, etc. I actually use Rit dye on some of the chicken grit, then blend it as needed. (Ballast is actually a bit darker then the pictures show.)

I like that - the colouring looks just right. I have a customer who is wondering about using Gargraves track, so I'll suggest he takes a look at this.
