This is an MTH non-powered SD40-2. I upgraded it to so-called "Three Rail Scale" standards by fixing the pilots, installing Kadee couplers and replacing the short three rail handrails with custom made full length ones. In addition, I added rooftop details commonly found on Santa Fe diesels in the 1980s and 90s, including an air conditioner, and radio antennae and mounting plates. I repositioned the horn to the long hood and installed an airline. That improves the model, though the trucks are mounted too far inboard. Perhaps one day I'll tackle that as well.

Wow, that's a lot of mods. Looks very good. How did you do the upgraded/extended hand rails?

John,

Thank you. I made the extended handrails out of .32 brass wire. On the front side rails, I just cut off the short rails and spliced in the new ones. For the front and rear rails, I made complete new ones and installed them into the stanchions.

I forgot to mention that because ATSF SD40-2s had front anti-climbers, I made and installed one of those using sheet styrene and some 1/48 scale diamond plate material. I made small horizontal supports for the front stanchions and glued them in place. At some point I may add lighting and even a new chassis so as to relocate the trucks to the correct position.
