Yes he used some kind of Photoshop software to create the smoke pattern. Please, when posting photos that have digital effects like this always declare it in the text so that everyone knows it. It's Ok to post digitally altered photos, as long as you disclose what it is in the same post.

That is a really beautiful scene Butch - great job. I must disclose though that this would have gotten my vote 100% except for the photoshopping, so I will have to choose another. And honestly to me the photoshopped smoke is more of a detraction than a plus.....you're scene would be even better without it!
